0010 85/11/11 00:32:26 * SPECIAL REPORT: CANADIAN CONFERENCE ON VLSI *
---- -------- -------- -------------------------------------------------

The CM4NEWS Publisher is pleased to be back from the 1985 Canadian
Conference on Very Large Scale Integration held at Royal York Hotel,
Toronto (Ontario), November 4-5, 1985. Besides the CM4NEWS Publisher,
BNR/NT was represented by Doug Colton, Terry Curtis, Ian McWalter,
John Hogeboom, Go S. Sunatori, Marc Roy, Asher Wilk and Viqar Minai.

The CM4NEWS Publisher regrets that he didn't submit the following papers:

   "Design of BNR's Half-Grid CMOS4 Standard Cells"
"Implementation of CMOS4 Composite Cell Library"
   "CM4NEWS: A Novel On-Line News/Entertainment System"
"Experience with Hard-Coded EXTRACT in CMOS4 Design"
"Characterization of BNR's World-Class Silicon Design System"
"The Effect of Working 80 Hours a Week on CMOS4"

The biggest surprise at the conference was the presence of very happy
Ian Roane (the master of complaints), whose official title at Novatel
Communications Ltd. is "Senior I.C. Layout Designer" instead of simple
MTS at BNR. He admitted that he left BNR for more money, and he was
giving out his proud business card to just about everybody around.
Ian is now in charge of the cell library at Novatel, and he was trying
very hard to bribe the CM4NEWS Publisher for BNR/NT's top-secret CMOS4
Design Rules Document (DE007).

Terry Curtis said in the hallway "There are fewer IC designers than
professional athletes in North America, but they are not paid nearly as
much." The CM4NEWS Publisher's interpretation of Terry's statement is
that each engineer (player) should be making at least $200K a year.
Then the inevitable question is "What about the managers??"

The CM4NEWS Publisher didn't miss the opportunity to attend the Canadian
Club of Toronto luncheon meeting November 4 at Royal York Hotel with the
guest speaker John Hugh Farrell, President of Telecom Canada. The Ball
Room of Royal York Hotel was connected with the EXPO 86 site in Vancouver
via a spectacular live television broadcast.

Go S. Sunatori, in the meantime, enjoyed the simulated intergalactic
travel "Tour of the Universe" at the base of the CN Tower. He stole
three Kleenex boxes and two plastic laundry bags from Royal York Hotel.
Go was approached by as many as 7 hookers on Yonge Street November 5.
