iNet2000 and Envoy100 Questions

I have been using the iNet2000 a few months with great satisfaction, and I also started experimenting with Envoy100. I have a couple of questions for you before I make further commitment, please.
How can I send E-mail to a UNIX mail address including BITNET (USA) and NetNorth and CA*Net in CANADA? For example, I have a requirement to communicate with the following addresses:
- clwayne@vax.darpa.mil
- uunet!bnrgate!bnr.ca!sunatori
Is iNET2000 going to be enhanced, when the ISDN line is introduced, to take advantage of its higher speed?
I intend to subscribe to when it becomes available in my area. How can I justify subscribing to both ALEX and iNET2000/Envoy100?

Thank you very much for your prompt reply. Since I am a novice user of Envoy, I have quite a few questions. Even with the manual, I was not able to read your message completely because my IBM-3101 terminal does not have the "scroll back" capability. I only wanted to read the first few lines of the message, but it moved so fast on the screen that I could not catch the first few lines, so my question is how to read line by line? I tried to put the message in the workplace by "EDIT" and "FORWARD" to myself, but it didn't work. How can I put a message into the workplace? I also saved the message with "SAVE AS" command, but "EDIT SAVE AS" did not let me use the "LIST ALL" subcommand which says "Nothing...".
I have great difficulties in screen editing and following the manual does not let me have the desired text. My cursor does not indicate the exact location of my edit, and I have spent hours and hours, for example, just to compose my sign-off message (yours) which is shown at the bottom of this very message. Any suggestions?
On a different topic, could you tell me how to scan files that I created? Also, is there a list of scripts that I can use? I know there is a script called "COMPOSE private.system", but I would like to know if there are more useful ones.
As I was told on the phone, I realise now that I cannot be addressed as Go Simon Sunatori but only as "Go Simon" Sunatori with the double quotes. Could you please consider enhancing Envoy 100 so that I can be addressed as Go Simon Sunatori, Go Sunatori, Simon Sunatori, Sunatori, Go.Simon.Sunatori, or Go.Simon.Sunatori/HyperInfo.Canada?
Lastly, I would like to know the developments on the ISDN service, especially when it will be offered and when iNet 2000 will take advantage of it. Thank you again.

I am sorry to ask you so many questions, but this electronic mail is so exciting that I am exploring the opportunities which seem endless.
First of all, my attempt to address a piece of mail to an Internet address has not worked yet. I followed exactly as you instructed on the TO: line (INTERNET MAIL @ NASA, etc.) followed by the TEXT line containing TO: sunatori@bnr.ca. This Internet address is my own at another company, but I have not received the mail after 24 hours. I am afraid the mail got lost since electronic mail should not take that long, I presume. Assuming that I finally succeed in sending Envoy to an Internet address, how could I receive one into Envoy? I suppose I need a pseudo-Internet address like Go.Simon.Sunatori@Envoy to tell the other party. Along this line, could you tell me if and when iNet/Envoy electronic bulletin/mail becomes fully compliant with the ISO X.400/X.500 International Standards, please?
Since I am wasting so much time on a simple task in the screen editor, I suspect that the DIP switches on my IBM-3101 terminal may not be set properly. Would you tell me how to set them, please? My current setting for your information is as follows: 01110011-10000100-00010000-10001000. I also want to know how to review a forwarded message once it's composed. I seem to be able to LIST and MODIFY the lines I entered, but not to be able to review and verify the message to be forwarded.
I am wondering if I would be able to send an Envoy-to-Fax overseas. The manual says "in Canada or the U.S.A.", but since regular Fax machine is able to send a fax to anywhere in the world, the natural question is "Why not Envoy?"
Lastly, I am planning to buy an Apple Macintosh system in the future. Could you please recommend the software compatible with iNet/Envoy as well as the Alex system, please? Thank you so much for your continuing support.

iNet 2000 and Envoy 100 Address

Through people sending messages to my iNet/Envoy account, I have found 3 peculiarities so far. I thought I should let you know just in case they are software bugs.
First of all, the X.400 address for iNet/Envoy does not support the ISO (International Standards Organisation) country code abbreviation. For example, "Canada" is accepted while "CA" is not, as shown below. Both "USA" and "US" are accepted, though.

Secondly, addressing with ID alone fails even though it specifies a most unique identity. Curiously, addressing with S (surname) alone works okay. This poses no problem for me because my last name is unique, but for a name like "Smith", it becomes critically confusing.

Thirdly, I would like to make a little suggestion that "TO" and "FROM" be indicated when scanning messages. I set autocopy so that the messages I send are saved, too. It becomes hard to distinguish whether the message shown is an incoming message or an outgoing message unless TO/FROM are indicated on the scan list.
Lastly, I was pleasantly surprised to find a "Teleport" terminal at the Ottawa International Airport. I was able to login to my iNet/Envoy account from there. I also noticed a few other services you offer, i.e., "Thornet", "Tymnet" and "Telenet". Could you please send me more information on these items as well as a list of "Teleport" locations?

Quotes ("") are required in many cases where a string has a space, "G=Go Simon", for example. Envoy rejects backslash (\) as an illegal character.
Does "PN=" replace ("S="), or ("S=" and "G=")? Also, what's the difference between "ID=" and "DD.ID="? What does DD stand for, and why are there 2 sets of X.400 addresses?
I don't understand why "S=" is mandatory in X.400 addressing even though "ID=" specifies a unique identity.
Is "/SITE=" specified in X.400? "C=CA" doesn't work in many Internet mail systems while "C=Canada", "C=US" and "C=USA" both work just fine.
On my business card, should I use a slash "/C=Canada/ADMD=Telecom/" or a semicolon ";C=Canada;ADMD=Telecom;" as a separator?
I set my character set to ASCII-7E for special characters in Envoy, but they get stripped off when the message goes out.
In Envoy, how can one put a message into a workspace file? Also, can one load the "TO:", "CC:" and "SUBJECT:" fields from a host computer? "&begin" puts a file into a message, but seems to work only for the TEXT field.
With Envoy connections to ATTMAIL, TELEMAIL, SPRINT and MCIMAIL, there must be more combinations. I feel there is a need for "Envoy-Internet bible".

I wasn't expecting such a thorough reply from you, so I was pleasantly astonished by your knowledge, insight and competence in this issue. Maybe there's something still left in the Liberal Party (my party, too :-)). Thanks to your explanations, I have much better understanding in the X.400 messaging. In fact, I had asked INET.CAC/ENVOY.CAC some of these questions, but gave up on receiving any meaningful answer at all. I have a few quick questions for clarification, if you don't mind.
Can I substitute every instance of TELEMAIL with SPRINTMAIL? Is the name TELEMAIL going to be phased out soon?
I certainly complained to ENVOY.CAC. I received a very polite phone call from Mediatel insisting that X.400 spec makes "S=" mandatory while "ID=" is not, even though my (and your) interpretation of X.400 shows otherwise. Therefore, I must beg you to put pressure on the ENVOY management to implement a full X.400 spec, including the replacement of "S=" with "ID=" as the most unique identity so that "S=" becomes unnecessary.
If the format of PN= is GivenName.SurName, how does my name formatted, PN=Go.Simon.Sunatori or PN=Go Simon.Sunatori or PN="Go Simon".Sunatori?
Here is what I intend to put on my business card, if and when ENVOY implements full X.400. Incidentally, there seems to be no international standards on the telephone number notation. Bell Canada uses a space as in "819 595-9210" but it is not compatible with some European numbers...

International Fax

While I was thinking of a universal telephone numbering scheme, I recalled your reply to my inquiry the other day on the international fax, as shown above. The various country codes can be explicitly marked with a plus sign "+" in front of them so that each country can be uniquely identified. This way, the present scheme can still work because of the absence of a "+", and any other country can be addressed. For example,

DATAPAC error message improvement

I have found out, in a very painful and time-consuming way, that I need a NUI number to access one of the government DATAPAC ports. This is to suggest to you an improvement of an error message from DATAPAC.
- "DATAPAC: call refused - collect call refused."
It is the use of "collect call" that is extremely confusing because I was calling a local number. Now I know exactly what it means thanks to the explanations by Mediatel and Bell Canada, but I believe that the message could say "you need a NUI number to access this port".

iNet/Envoy Plus for the Macintosh

This is to express my deepest disappointment to hear that the development of iNet Plus and Envoy Plus for the Macintosh has been cancelled.
Ever since the PC version of iNet Plus and Envoy Plus was released, I have been eagerly waiting for the Macintosh version. I have budgeted about 200$ for this exciting product, and I have made repeated inquiries to Stentor Telecom regarding availability of the Macintosh version.
Here is my vision of future telecommunications services, and I wonder if they will ever be delivered at all by Stentor Telecom.
- Immediate adoption of X.400 (1988) standards instead of X.400 (1984) for EnvoyMHS.
- Adoption of 16-bit UNICODE and eventually 32-bit ISO-10646 character set.
- Migration to ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) speed at 64 Kb/s as soon as Bell Canada starts offering the MicroLink service.
- International EnvoyFax capability with the "+" addressing scheme.
- Fax receiving and storage service.
- Reinstatement of EnvoyPost for the U.S. and new overseas service.
- Merging iNet/Envoy with ALEX as a single-entry-point information service.
- Teleconferencing and data sharing through iNet/Envoy, using Northern Telecom's VISIT hardware and software.
- Multimedia iNet/Envoy with audio, video, virtual reality, cyberspace, etc.
- Issuing integrated iNet/Envoy usage statements through Envoy and on-line payment through EDI (Electronic Data Interchange).
I would be very pleased if my customer complaint and constructive suggestions are forwarded to the president of Stentor Telecom for serious review.

I was told in late 1992 that Stentor Telecom is talking to Internet for an official E-mail interconnection possibly by 1993-Q1. In the mean time, the demand seems to be ever increasing, as shown above. I wonder if you could give me an update on the status of the negotiation. Thank you.

Thank you so much for your reply. I regularly check THE NET News (2), so I would be quite happy to see a news item with instructions on how to send to/from Internet, just as you have done for other connections.
One other outstanding issue that I have been waiting for more than 1 year is the Macintosh version of THE NET Plus (iNet Plus/Envoy Plus). I heard a few months ago that the software itself was almost ready to be shipped. I am looking forward to see a News (2) announcement once it happens.

Worldlinx

As a very loyal THE NET customer, I have been making numerous product inquiries and suggestions so that my electronic communication would become simpler and your profits would go up due to increased usage.
However, I seem to waste quite a bit of productivity due partly to the lack of THE NET Plus package for Macintosh and also to the lack of some connections including Internet, EnvoyPost to the U.S.A., Overseas FAX, and so on and on. I even volunteered to be a beta testing site for some of your new products.
I think that this illustrates potential opportunities for Worldlinx, especially with such competitor as the FreeNet. I wonder if Worldlinx is committed to the evolution to keep ahead of the other information providers.

I have been a user of Bell Mediatel/Telecom Canada/Stentor/WorldLinx Envoy 100/iNet 2000/The Net (confusing enough). I have made some constructive suggestions on improvement opportunities over the years, even offering to be a beta tester. Thus, I would not mind being notified on such an exciting development as the Internet service. I always check the News item on The Net, but I have not noticed anything on Internet.
Could you please give me as much information as you can on this new WorldLinx service? Thanks.
