I noticed the following public announcement in the newspaper during the last week of 1997.

Photo: Photography in Science: Beauty of Another Order at the National Gallery of Canada, 380 Sussex Dr., ends Jan. 4. The gallery is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily (closed Jan. 1). Free. 990-7081

I knew that the exhibition was free only on Thursdays, so I telephoned the number above to confirm that it was indeed "Free". I heard a recorded greeting, but did not leave a message as I assumed that the exhibition became free because the National Gallery of Canada was closed on the 2 Thursdays during the holiday season, i.e., Christmas Day and the New Year's Day.
I visited the National Gallery 1998-01-02 (Friday). Although I did not have to pay for parking, it was a long and tough walk in the snow from the car parked 3 blocks away. When I showed the newspaper clip to the receptionist at the National Gallery, she said that the exhibition was $4.00 CAD per adult. She telephoned the number above, but there was no answer. Since our large family of 5 is not rich, I chose not to purchase the tickets. The receptionist asked a security guard to make a photocopy of the newspaper clip because other people had thought the exhibition was free.

When I got home, I immediately telephoned the number above, and left a message explaining the situation. I was hoping that the issue would be clarified before the exhibition was over. However, there was no reply from the National Gallery of Canada. Then, I saw yet another public announcement in the newspaper on Sunday, 2 days after my disappointing visit.

Today is your final chance to see the exhibit Photography in Science: Beauty of Another Order at the National Gallery of Canada, 380 Sussex Dr. The exhibition, which runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., presents more than 200 images of natural history, physics experiments, geological surveys and archeological digs, as well as astronomical, botanical and anatomical photographs. Admission is free. Call 990-7081 for more information.

Please note that the notice says yet again "Admission is free". I telephoned the number above and left another message. I had been looking forward to this exhibition, but our holiday season was wrecked in ruins. Now that the exhibition is over, it would be nice to receive a booklet of the exhibition.
