2005-10-03|Sunatori's Fruit Flies in Ground Coffee
You asked for it
- I heeded advice that used ground coffee beans may add nutrients to house plants. Every time I add used ground coffee to the plant soil, I notice proliferation of fruit flies around the house plants. Upon close inspection of the ground coffee, there are not only fruit flies but also tiny jumping bugs.
- Since many organisms were proven to have survived intense heat and pressure of the break-up of Space Shuttle "Columbia" in 2003, these flies and jumping bugs may be able to survive high-temperature processing and coffee-brewing. I have no idea what type of health risks the fruit fly eggs pose, but they may contain harmful bacteria and/or virus.
- Although these bugs may have originated elsewhere in the house and gathered on the ground coffee on the plant soil to reproduce, I believe that it is worth investigating if commercially available ground coffee may contain eggs from the place of origin. For your information, my brand is "Maxwell House"
