2024-03-12|Bell Fibe Internet Connection lost every day
To whom it may concern
Several years ago, I subscribed to Bell Canada's Fibe with Home Hub 2000 modem. Over the years, my subscription was upgraded eventually to Fibe 500 at 500 Mb/s. SamKnows service which monitors Internet speed consistently reports the speed of 500+ Mb/s. I have only about 10 devices connected to Wi-Fi, and the service has been quite satisfactory in terms of speed.
I have experienced no major problems accessing numerous websites/webpages every day for work and research. However, I started to notice intermittent outages lasting up to 1 minute during FaceTime and Skype calls at random moments. I also watch about 20 YouTube videos and 2 to 4 Tubi movies every day, and some movies experience brief interruption once in a while even though streaming services are buffered.
I planned to report the problem to Bell Canada because my daughter refuses to stay home due to such lack of reliability for her super-important job interviews. My quick Internet search revealed that Bell Canada Fibe service's Internet connection problem is wide-spread.
Although I worked at Bell-Northern Research/Northern Telecom (BNR/NT) for 11 years or so, my area was far from network administration/management. However, it seems to me that the connection problem may be related to throttling algorithm running amok?
According to Wikipedia, bandwidth throttling consists in the limitation of the communication speed (bytes or kilobytes per second), of the ingoing (received) or outgoing (sent) data in a network node or in a network device.
The Internet Traffic Management Practices (ITMP) states: "Wireless Home Internet customers who subscribe to an unlimited usage package will not be impacted by the ITMP until they exhaust the maximum-speed usage in their plan." So, if Fibe 500 plan customers like me reach the maximum-speed of 500 Mb/s, then faulty ITMP algorithm may trigger Internet outage for 1 minute or so. If Gigabit Fibe 1.5 customers reach the maximum-speed of 1.5 Gb/s, then faulty ITMP algorithm may trigger Internet outage for 20 minutes or so, as reported by many participants in this forum.
Again, this is a purely speculative theory in a desperate attempt to pinpoint the root cause of this extremely frustrating situation for so many people.
