We were struck by an unexpected basement flood due to defective drain tiles on 1996-04-08. Water was leaking into the basement at a rate of more than 1 000 litres per day for 2 weeks. To our amazement, the insurance company refused to pay any compensation, citing the "exception clause" on "water escape". We received 0 (zero) cent for an estimated damage of thousands of dollars! We could not even launch a lawsuit because the original contractor had gone out of business!! We subsequently spent some $7 000 CAD to have the foundations repaired. In the aftermath of the excavation, we decided to restart the lawn with clovers. The clover lawn is greener, but not more resistant than grass as it did not grow where grass was not growing. However, it needs less fertiliser. Now we are looking for a herbicide that kills everything but clovers. We also started composting in the fall.
Exactly 4 months later, a strong thunderstorm hit the Ottawa-Hull region 1996-08-08, and we experienced yet another flood in the basement. Although the amount of water was much less than the first flood, it turned out to be a godsend because the flood was caused by "sewer backup". The damage was covered this time, so after crying in misery for a few months, we were finally laughing all the way to the bank! We intend to spend the money on a family trip to Vancouver (British Columbia) CANADA next year.
A family visit to the Museum of Science and Technology in Ottawa (Ontario) CANADA was featured in the IEEE Spectrum magazine (1996-04). However, Go Simon got into hot water because the agricultural exhibit that he recalled from a long-term memory and criticised for the lack of inspiration, no longer existed in the museum when the article was published.
Our skating rink in the backyard attracted some attention. So, Go Simon started to write an on-line hypertext monograph called How to Build a Backyard Skating Rink for sale at $1.99 USD on the Internet for a world-wide audience. The basement floods happened while he was writing the electronic book, so he quickly added a warning Build a Skating Rink on a Neighbor's Backyard instead of Your Own. He also wrote a Miracle Lasagna Recipe, for sale at $1.99 USD on the Internet. The recipe makes clever use of lots of onions and broccoli stems that kids normally hate to eat.
In the spring, Go Simon successfully defended a parking ticket in the municipal court. He is now confident that he could convince a judge for his innocence and get away from any violation as long as it has an appearance of being more than 50% legal. He is contemplating a career move to become a blood-sucking lawyer.
Go Simon's media star status continued with yet another invention on the @discovery.ca programme. His design for the Discovery Challenge contest called Maglev Shopping Cart won a prize in front of a Canada-wide television audience, and he received yet another T-shirt. Based on the design, he filed a first solo patent application entitled Magnetically Levitated Axleless Wheel System. Meanwhile, he shamelessly recycled his last year's losing entry Ellipsoidal Squirrel-Free Bird Feeder, and received an honourable mention on the programme.
Finally, we now have our own World-Wide Web site on the Internet with global presence, including on-line Christmas cards since 1989. Go Simon had Michèle nominate him for many egotistic Internet awards, and his HyperInfo Knowledge Power Centre actually won the 1996 Canadian Internet Special Achievement Award, beating out such giant corporations as Bell Canada and CBC.

Michèle survived an endless series of downsizing, restructuring and turmoil over scandals and coverups at the Department of National Defence. The latest one was a charge laid against a fellow Defence Scientist who downloaded thousands of images of child pornography from the Internet. She wonders when it will stop. In the mean time, her boss now a team leader, as opposed to a director, is frustrated by the lack of control over the team. So, Michèle has been attending mostly all the team leaders' meetings. She even represented the team at the annual Materiel Group Meeting, and got a letter of appreciation from General Lavoie. So, she cannot complain.
It was the kids last year, but this year the parents suffered from head lices. The little critters found Michèle's hair so attractive that they stayed there for weeks laying eggs.
François is in grade 2, and Véronique started pre-school this year. François and Véronique played soccer during the summer. They have had a few sleep-overs at their friends' places, and of course returned the favour. Évelyne rides a bicycle with small wheels and talks more. She has started mastering the art of influencing people by calling her parents "ma belle maman d'amour" and "mon beau papa d'amour".

Le trèfle est plus vert, mais pas plus résistant que l'herbe car il n'a pas poussé là où l'herbe ne poussait pas. Cependant ça nécessite moins d'engrais. Nous cherchons maintenant un herbicide qui tue tout sauf les trèfles. On a aussi commencé à faire du compostage.

Entretemps, son patron, maintenant un chef d'équipe par opposition à un directeur, est frustré par son manque de contrôle sur l'équipe. Donc Michèle le remplace sur presque toutes les réunions de chefs d'équipe. Elle a aussi représenté l'équipe à la réunion annuelle du groupe du matériel. Elle a reçu une lettre d'appréciation du Général Lavoie. Elle ne se plaint donc pas.
C'était les enfants l'an dernier, mais cette année c'était les parents qui avaient des lentes. Les petites bestioles ont trouvé les cheveux de Michèle tellement attrayants qu'ils y sont restés durant plusieurs semaines déposant des centaines d'oeufs.
François est en 2e année, et Véronique a commencé le pré-scolaire cette année. François et Véronique ont joué au soccer pendant l'été. Ils sont allés dormir chez leurs amis quelque fois et bien sûr ont retourné la politesse. Évelyne fait de la bicyclette avec des petites roues et parle plus. Elle a commencé à maîtriser l'art d'influencer les gens en appelant ses parents "ma belle maman d'amour" and "mon beau papa d'amour".
